Field service engineers and technicians work for the companies that build automation equipment -- drives, robots, control systems, switchgear -- and go to customer sites to install it, start it up, fix it when it fails and keep it running. A plant buys a robot cell or a distributed control system; the field service engineer is the person who shows up to commission it and the one called when it goes down.
The defining trait is travel. Most roles cover a region or the whole country from home, with frequent overnight stays, and many include on-call rotations, because a stopped production line costs the customer by the hour. Some "resident" roles are based full-time at one large customer site instead.
