A building automation system (BAS, also called a building management system or BMS) is the control system behind a large building: it runs heating, cooling and ventilation, and often lighting, energy metering and access control, for offices, hospitals, universities, airports and data centers. Building automation jobs are the people who design, install, program, commission and service those systems.
The work is controls work in a different setting. Instead of a production line, the "process" is a building, and the controllers talk over building protocols such as BACnet, Modbus and (in Europe) KNX. Most roles are with the companies that make the systems -- Siemens (Desigo), Honeywell, Johnson Controls (Metasys) -- or the contractors who install them, and many are regional technician jobs with a service van rather than long-distance travel.
